A US District Judge will hold a hearing on Friday to consider objections from families of the victims involved in the Boeing 737 MAX 8 tragedies in 2018 and 2019. It comes after the planemaking company agreed over the summer to plead guilty to criminal fraud charges related to the crashes.
Boeing finalized the agreement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pay a fine of more than $485 million, avoiding going to trial. However, the victims’ families reportedly argue that the penalty is too low and are seeking a higher fine.
A “superficial deal”
34 families who lost loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 (ET302) are represented by Kreindler & Kreindler, the top aviation law firm in the world. District Judge Reed O’Connor will hear objections from the families on Friday and will not decide whether to accept the proposed deal until after the hearing.

In a statement to Simple Flying on Wednesday, Erin Applebaum, a Partner at the firm, slammed the plea deal and explained that regulators should hold Boeing accountable.
