Summary Delta Air Lines will launch a new daily nonstop service from Atlanta to Tulum’s new airport, offering US citizens a convenient option to visit the coastal Mexican region.
The new airport in Tulum will serve as a gateway to the region’s pristine beaches and help ease saturation levels at Cancun International Airport.
Delta’s connectivity to Mexico is strong, with numerous flights from Atlanta and other US cities, while Tulum International has also attracted interest from domestic airlines like Viva Aerobus and Aeromexico.
The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) to serve Tulum in the Mexican Caribbean region has received great news. Delta Air Lines has announced it will launch a new route, a daily nonstop service to this new airport, starting in late March 2024.
A new route to the United States
It was a matter of time. The new airport in Tulum, which is set to serve this highly touristic region south of Cancun, will open its doors before the year ends. It is expected the airport will serve as a gateway to the pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere of this coastal Mexican region while, at the same time, helping ease the saturation levels at Cancun International Airport (CUN).
For US citizens who often fly to Mexico for the holidays, they will now have a new option in their itineraries. Starting in late March 2024, Delta Air Lines will operate daily nonstop service from its hometown Atlanta hub at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to the new Tulum airport.
The airline’s senior vice president of Network Planning, Joe Esposito, said in a statement that Delta is uniquely positioned to give customers convenient and direct access from the US to Tulum, a premium leisure destination known for its boutique hotels, Mayan ruins, and eco-friendly spirit. He added,
“We know Tulum-bound customers will enjoy the elevated experience Delta consistently offers – and now without a two-hour drive from Cancun – as we grow our footprint in Mexico and throughout the Yucatan region.”
Delta’s daily Atlanta-Tulum service will launch on March 28, 2024. It will operate year-round onboard a 160-seat Boeing 737-800.
Delta’s connectivity to Mexico
Delta Air Lines has great connectivity to Mexico, fueled partly by its partnership with Aeromexico. The US carrier operates 84 weekly flights from Atlanta to six Mexican destinations as of October 2023. Delta schedules 29 weekly flights to Cancun, 28 weekly flights to Mexico City, eight to San José del Cabo, seven to Guadalajara and Monterrey, and five to Puerto Vallarta, according to data from Cirium.

Beyond Atlanta, Delta offers 97 additional weekly flights to Mexico, flying from Boston, Detroit, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Salt Lake City. Atlanta remains Delta’s main hub to serve the southern neighbor.
Tulum’s connectivity
Mexico’s newest airport is set to open in December 2023. Tulum International has already received interest from Viva Aerobus and Aeromexico, two domestic companies that announced flights to and from the new airport.
Viva Aerobus expects to open five new routes from Tulum International, serving Guadalajara (GDL), Mexico City (MEX), Monterrey (MTY), Mexico City Felipe Ángeles (NLU), and Tijuana (TIJ). Overall, Viva Aerobus will offer 19 weekly flights to and from Tulum.
Meanwhile, Aeromexico will only operate one route, connecting Tulum to Mexico City, operating two daily flights. Volaris, the country’s main low-cost carrier, has not announced new routes to Tulum International.
