If there’s one thing that Hideo Kojima loves, it’s movies. The Death Stranding 2: On The Beach game designer and creator has never been shy about his passion for cinema, with his social media bio touting that “70% of my body is made of movies,” and regularly posting which of the latest releases he’s seen in theaters. These reviews offer up a glimpse into the mind of one of gaming’s most preeminent auteurs. And, as it turns out, he’s just as fucking confused about what’s going on in Captain America: Brave New World as we are.
“I watched “Captain America: Brave New World” in IMAX,” Kojima wrote on X on Sunday. “I vaguely remember Sam receiving the shield in “Endgame,” but when did he officially become Cap? Is it because I haven’t seen “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?”
It really says something that Kojima, the mind behind two of the most unabashedly convoluted universes in gaming (Metal Gear and Death Stranding), can’t quite wrap his head around what the hell’s going on in the MCU nowadays. It’s all the more astounding because, frankly, Kojima never posts even remotely critical movie reviews.
A Kojima movie post often fits squarely into either one of two categories: He loved it (flowery sentences rhapsodizing the film and its director) or he hated it (one-sentence posts à la “Saw “Madame Web” at the theater.”). And then, there’s Captain America: Brave New World: a movie so baffling that even Kojima is openly asking questions.
Don’t worry Kojima, hopefully The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be a bit more intelligible when it comes out.
