It appears Jalen Hurts nearly had a new backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. During an interview with Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce on the “New Heights” podcast, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders revealed that the Eagles had an interest in drafting his son Shedeur Sanders.
Coach Prime noted that the Eagles, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens were among the teams that showed an interest in drafting Sanders as the star quarterback started to fall during the 2025 NFL draft. Ultimately, the Browns traded up to select Sanders in the fifth round, and it is no coincidence that is was the franchise of the three potential teams that seemingly had the easiest path to winning the starting gig.

The Eagles, Ravens & Browns Had an Interest in Drafting QB Shedeur Sanders, Says Deion Sanders
The Eagles’ interest in Sanders was not previously reported as Coach Prime admitted that he “let a cat out of the bag” with the NFL news. Sanders’ opinion of the Eagles was not revealed, but the former Colorado signal-caller was likely not eager to sit behind Jalen Hurts given his reluctance to back up Lamar Jackson.
“They made a big deal out of (the Ravens),” Coach Prime noted in a September 22, 2025, interview on the “New Heights” podcast. “Philly called us on draft day. They didn’t mention that. I just let a cat out of the bag. Who was it? Baltimore and the Browns. They forget I played for Baltimore so me and Ozzie (Newsome) are cool.
“So, we understood that whole conversation, and he wanted to talk to Shedeur as well as he wanted to talk to me. And I put Shedeur on the phone and I don’t want to say how it went, but how in the world can somebody fault him for saying or thinking, ‘Why in the world would I go back up Lamar for 10 more years?’ I’ve never sat on the bench and said, ‘Well, I learned a lot today.’”
Sanders combined for 41 touchdowns during his final season at Colorado in 2024.
