Aaron Rodgers suffered a wrist injury in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The four-time NFL MVP was forced to exit in the second quarter and was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Rodgers underwent tests to determine the extent of the injury and the Steelers got some good news on Tuesday. After being diagnosed with a fracture on his non-throwing wrist, it was confirmed that the 41-year-old will not require surgery to address the problem. In fact, head coach Mike Tomlin did not shut down the possibility of Rodgers suiting up for Sunday’s Week 12 contest against the Chicago Bears.
Rodgers was playing well in his first season with Pittsburgh before he injured his wrist. The four-time All-Pro QB, who signed a one-year, $13.6 million deal with the Steelers during the offseason, had already registered 192-of-289 completed passes (66.4%) in his first 10 games for 1,969 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Rodgers is now in danger of missing time because of his wrist issue. This has led to the Steelers making a decision to address their QB1’s potential absence. As reported by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Pittsburgh decided to work out quarterbacks Jason Bean and Tanner Mordecai on Tuesday. However, neither of them was signed.
Mason Rudolph is expected to start in Rodgers’ place on Sunday if the latter is unable to play, with Will Howard being elevated to the QB2 role. The Steelers also have Skylar Thompson on their roster, but he is currently on injured reserve. Pittsburgh currently has no quarterbacks on its practice squad, which is why they are now exploring the possibility of singing another backup. Bean and Mordecai are options, but the Steelers could also look elsewhere.
The Steelers, who improved to 6-4 after their win over Cincinnati, will be on the road for Week 12. They will battle the Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
