Senate Democrats on Monday sent the White House their latest proposal to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A White House official told The National News Desk (TNND) that the office received the offer late in the night and is reviewing it.
It’s unclear what the lawmakers presented. TNND requested comment from Minority Leader Chuck Schumer but hasn’t received a response.
DHS has been running without funding for the past month as Democrats and the White House negotiate on changes to its operations. Schumer has said that the department’s immigration agencies must at least be more transparent, including through the identification of its officers and the prohibition of face masks, when enforcing laws.
“We know, very simply, that Democrats just want ICE to behave like any police department in America,” the senator said during a debate with Majority Leader John Thune on Thursday.
Republicans have accused the Democrats of keeping DHS unfunded for political reasons. Thune said Tuesday that Schumer has rejected changes to the department that he previously asked for.
“For weeks Democrats have spoken about the urgent need for reforms to immigration enforcement,” Thune said during a speech in the chamber. “But it’s been Democrats who have been the biggest obstacle to getting those reforms enacted.”
