The ultimate goal is the transition of the Kiev army from a device using Soviet / Russian equipment to one built with Western ones. Much of the material has yet to be produced, it will take months or years
The new US aid package to Ukraine broadcasts a message that goes beyond numbers: the White House thinks more and more in the long term and organizes itself accordingly.
Washington authorized $ 1.1 billion worth of material. The money is used to guarantee another 18 Himars rocket launchers, a large number of vehicles for logistics and for towing guns, armored off-road vehicles, ammunition, anti-drone equipment. But the interesting point is the clarification of the official sources: much of this material must be produced, months or years will pass before it can reach Kiev. The Pentagon wants to continue supporting the friend but he cannot fish indefinitely from his deposits (as Zelensky asks), there is a threshold to be respected that involves national security: you must not deplete your supplies. Speech that extends to the entire Atlantic Alliance, called to make available what it could give. The urgency to stem the invader was gradually accompanied by fear of not having enough for their own defense.
The confirmation of these concerns – expressed several times – is solidified with the recent meeting of donors in Brussels. A summit in which the guidelines indicated in a Pentagon statement were discussed: identification of obstacles or nodes in the supply of main components and accessories; plans to increase the development of long-range artillery, air defense, air-to-ground missile systems. The plan broadens the depth of the commitment and aims at the standardization of equipment, as well as interchangeability. Today the Ukrainian army has dozens of different models (guns, armored vehicles, other), and it’s complicated to keep everything up and running when you need spare parts from abroad.
The Americans want to set up repair and maintenance shops in more advanced locations to reduce the time and avoid that the vehicles are sent far, to the rear, or even outside the country where they are put back on track. The resistance, in recent months, has shown adaptability. For example, he used Western missiles on Russian-designed fighters and integrated his artillery units to the best of their ability. All forever under stress, having to defend and attack. Now NATO’s intent is to get out of the emergency by giving greater solidity to a Ukrainian network which, however, cannot do without external solidarity. The final target is the transition of the Kiev army from a device using Soviet / Russian equipment to one built with Western ones. This is why we are talking about years.
