Venezuela’s government on Sunday denounced military exercises being performed by Trinidad and Tobago and the U.S.
The activities, which involve training between American Marines and Trinbagonian soldiers in the island nation’s capital, are a “hostile provocation” against Venezuela and a “serious threat” to Caribbean peace, the said. Trinidad and Tobago’s prime minister is allowing the U.S. to use the country as a port for wartime activities, according to Venezuela.
“The Government of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has renounced the sovereignty of Trinidad and Tobago to act as a military colony subordinated to U.S. hegemonic interests, turning its territory into an American aircraft carrier for war across the Caribbean against Venezuela, against Colombia, and against all of South America,” the Venezuelan government said.
Trinidad and Tobago explained in a statement that the training is to “bolster the fight” against and to grow resilience through training, humanitarian activities and “security cooperation.” The exercise will also strengthen the partnership between the island nation and the U.S., Trinidad and Tobago noted.
“The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has repeatedly made it clear that it values this country’s relationship with the people of Venezuela given our shared history and close fraternal relations,” the government said. “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago also once more reiterates its commitment to the people of the Caribbean for the creation of a safer, stronger and more prosperous Region.”
