The Agostino Gemelli University Hospital is among the 250 best hospitals in the world according to the 2022 ranking drawn up by Newsweek magazine. And it’s the best in Italy.
The 2022 ranking of the American magazine on hospitals in the world
Every year, the US weekly, distributed in 4 million copies worldwide, analyzes hundreds of hospitals on every continent in order to provide “the best comparison of data regarding the performance and reputation of hospitals” to ensure that patients and their families can make the best possible choice and to provide hospitals themselves with a term of comparison with their peers “in an era of unprecedented change”.
How data is collected and analyzed
The ranking is divided into 11 specialties: pediatrics, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, neurology, urology, pulmonology, cardiology and gastroenterology. The analysis involves more than 800,000 experts including doctors, hospital directors and health professionals in 27 different countries, who are asked to answer a research and recommend the best hospitals in their state or in others. Patient reviews are also collected, often done through insurance companies. Finally, the third factor is that of “medical performance indicators” in hospitals, for example information on the quality of treatments and hygiene measures.
Gemelli is first in Italy ahead of Niguarda
The Gemelli hospital (founded in 1964), is therefore in the top 250 of the best in the world – at position 37 – before even the Niguarda in Milan which is in 50th position. On a national level, the Gemini gets the first position with 93.3% of the preferences. Behind again the Niguarda and on the lowest step of the podium the Sant’Orsola-Malpighi of Bologna. In 18th place the Sant’Andrea, at the 36th Umberto I before Tor Vergata, at the 45th the San Camillo-Forlanini, while at the 63rd the Campus Bio-medico di Trigoria. After the 70th place both the San Giovanni Addolorata and the San Filippo Neri with Pertini closing the Roman ranking in 103rd place out of 112 structures analyzed. The IFO Regina Elena-San Gallicano, the hospital physiotherapy institute located in Mostacciano, does not receive any evaluation, not being in the ranking.
