Oswego, N.Y. — The first on-track racing for Super DIRT Week 53 occurred Wednesday night at the Oswego Speedway when a record field of 98 DIRT car 358 modifieds ran their time trials and heat races for Friday night’s Salute to the Troops 150 feature race.
Wednesday afternoon’s time trial session for DIRT car 358 modifieds locked in the top six qualifiers for Friday’s 150-lap race. Matt Sheppard was the quickest and this Savannah racer picked up a $1,000 bonus for his pole run.
Watertown’s Billy Dunn secured the outside pole and he collected a $750 check for his effort. Matt Janczuk was the third guaranteed starter, followed by Alex Payne, Jessica Friesen, and Matt Stangle in the top six.
Four 20-lap heat races were run for the 358s and Jimmy Phelps, Darren Smith, Billy Dunn and Matt Janczuk each picked up a $1,000 check for their victories
Mat Williamson has won the last two DIRT Week main events for 358s, but this Canadian racer blew his engine prior to time trials Wednesday. Several crewmen hustled back to his St. Catharines, Ontario garage to get his backup modified.
They arrived back in Oswego just in time to start the last heat, starting from the 24th and last position. Williamson shifted into high gear and raced into the fifth finishing position and that great comeback gives him a chance to win his third straight 358 main event Friday.
Thirty-four DIRT pro stocks were also on hand Wednesday to run their time trials and heat races. Devon Camenga of Troy picked up $500 for winning the pole position and Kyle Hoard got $250 for winning the outside pole.
Chris Stalker, Luke Horning and Beau Ballard each won a ten-lap pro stock heat race and won $500 each.
The five-eighths-mile Oswego oval stayed smooth and fast all night. A brief shower after pro stock heats briefly slowed up the qualifying program.
WORKING MAN’S RACE
Back in 2004, Short Track Super Series promoter Brett Deyo ran a program directly against the Saturday Super DIRT event at the Afton Speedway. The event was successful and after being run at four different track, the Working Man’s modified special is back at Afton this Saturday.
A $22,000 purse is on the line for the 50-lap modified feature on the one-third mile Afton Fairgrounds Speedway, with a $4,000 first place prize. A $1.500-to-win sportsman event is set for Friday night at Afton.
RACE OF CHAMPIONS 150 SET FOR THOMPSON SPEEDWAY
The 75th Race of Champions 150 is set to run this Saturday at the Thompson (Connecticut) Speedway. The RoC event will be a part of the 63rd World Series of Short Track racing program at this New England facility.
The Whelen Modified Tour runs Sunday afternoon, and the New England Supermodified Series is also scheduled. Eighteen different classes of short-track racing machines will be in action over the three-day weekend of speed.
The five-eighths mile Thompson track was the first paved track built for auto racing in the country.
