You have a 10 Lire with the ear? You know, then, that you might have a little big fortune on your hands in the form of the currency lightest there is.
It is a coin that many of us, years ago, will have handled over and over again but that today is worth much more. This coin was produced in Italma, a metal alloy that was actually used for most of the Lira coins; the coins from 10 Lire with the ear they weigh approximately one and a half grams for less than 25 millimeters in diameter.
These coins were minted for the first time in 1951 and characterize them are precisely two diverging ears of wheat (one upwards and the other to the right) close to the face value represented by a slightly 10 superimposed.
On the other side of the coin there is a plow, which is a reference to the peasant economy typical of the post-war period, flanked by the writing “Italian Republic” and the date of mintingas well as the letter “R”, symbol of the mint of Rome that we also see today on all our Euros.
There are obviously many examples of 10 Lire with the Ear but some deserve special and considerable attention. Let’s find out what they are and how to recognize them.
The 10 Lire with the ear of 1954 they are most likely the most precious of all but they are not the only ones that can represent a small treasure. A 1954 mount in Fior di Conio state (the wording that identifies the equivalent version in terms of gloss and finish at the time of issue) may be worth well 110 euros.
Then there are the coins of 1965 which can be worth up to 35 euros each; in general all coins 10 Lire minted in the 1950s, they can reach a minimum value of about 30 euros if they are in perfect condition. Finally there is the inevitable coin with error. Numismatics experts know perfectly well how often coins characterized by minting errors are actually those with the highest value.
In the case of 10 lire with ear the error came in 1991 when the coin was minted with the axes upside down compared to how it should have been: these 10 lire with upside-down ears can also be worth 70 euros if they are in good condition, Brilliant Uncirculated.
So now all that remains is to get busy emptying all drawers, old wallets and hidden piggy banks with the hope of finding the 10 lire right that could really make a difference or, better, be a turning point for our life.
