Google, Apple among over 200 entities joining US AI Safety Institute to manage AI

The U.S. government said that several artificial intelligence-focused companies were among over 200 entities joining a new U.S. consortium to help with the safe development and deployment of generative AI, Reuters reported.
On Wednesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo had announced key members of an executive leadership team to lead the U.S. AI Safety Institute, or AISI, which would be set up at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, or NIST. Elizabeth Kelly would lead the Institute as its inaugural Director and Elham Tabassi will serve as chief technology officer.
The U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium, or AISIC, includes Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), OpenAI, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet’s Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Anthropic, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), Palantir (PLTR), Intel (INTC) JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), according to the report.
The group also includes BP (BP), Cisco Systems (CSCO), IBM (IBM), Hewlett Packard (HPE), Northop Grumman (NOC), Mastercard (MA), Qualcomm (QCOM), Visa (V), and several academic institutions and government agencies, who will be part of the U.S. AI Safety Institute, or AISI.
Amazon said it collaborating with NIST in AISIC to set up a new measurement science which will enable the identification of proven, scalable, and interoperable measurements to promote development of trustworthy AI and its responsible use.
In addition, Amazon will contribute $5M in compute credits to the Institute to help develop tools and methodologies which organizations can use to evaluate the safety of their foundation models.
NIST does not evaluate commercial products under the consortium and does not endorse any product or service used, the company added.
