FIFTH DISTRICT, NJ — Because of a demonstrated record of excellence in school and the community, and strong sense of duty to country, 34 Fifth District students got congressional nominations to one of four renowned military service academies.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), through the counsel of a selection committee, nominated the students to attend U.S. Military Academy West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He presented certificates of recognition to each of the students at a Dec. 18 ceremony at Ramapo College. “We are here, because of the nominees themselves who, at such a young age, already show a tremendous commitment to serving our country,” Gottheimer said. “I am amazed every year — these students blow me away with everything they do — from athletics to academics to community service.”
Gottheimer’s selection committee is comprised of local leaders and veterans who have served in different branches of the armed forces, including Ramapo College President Cindy Jebb, who is a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General and West Point graduate. Jebb, in introducing Gottheimer at the ceremony, outlined five leadership traits for the students that, she said, she has aimed to embody since graduating: self-discipline, preparation, humility, embracing discomfort, and trust.
“Whatever academy or sector you end up contributing to, these (principles) are universal in terms of how we think about leadership,” Jebb said. Each of the students nominated will go through the academies’ rigorous application process. Below is a list of those nominated.
