Gulf of America name change now appears on Google Maps for US users

(CNN) – The body of water widely known as the Gulf of Mexico is now listed as the Gulf of America for United States-based users of Google Maps in keeping with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
Google says its policy is to change names when they have been updated by official government sources. Trump changed the name of the body of water through an executive order in January.
As of Monday, Google Maps now reflects that change for U.S. users. Users in Mexico will still see the name Gulf of Mexico, while everywhere else, users will see both names.
The change comes the day after Trump signed a proclamation declaring Feb. 9 “the first ever Gulf of America Day” as Air Force One flew over the body of water on its way to New Orleans, where Trump attended the Super Bowl.
In January, Trump also changed the name of Mount Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley. Former President Barack Obama made the change to Denali in 2015 to honor the state’s native people.
Google said it will also change the mountain’s name on its maps, but that hasn’t happened yet.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a notice Monday that it is updating its data and charts to reflect both name changes.
As for what map and globemakers do, that decision is up to them.
