It’s only taken a single game for the San Francisco 49ers to have a lengthy injured list, but they received some good news about a few of their stars before Sunday’s Week 2 matchup in New Orleans against the Saints.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, wide receiver Jauan Jennings is expected to play on Sunday despite dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered in Seattle last week. Jennings didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday, but was a limited participant on Friday before he was listed as questionable. Schefter’s report came after NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said on Saturday night that Jennings would be a “game-time decision.” But Rapoport also noted there was optimism Jennings could play.

Another 49ers star who is questionable for Sunday is left tackle Trent Williams, who has a knee injury. Like Jennings, Williams’ only time on the practice field this week was as a limited participant on Friday, and Schefter reported the offensive lineman will test his knee pregame to see if he can play. NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Jennifer Lee Chan said Williams had already shown up to the stadium as of 6:11 a.m. PT on Sunday morning.
If Williams isn’t able to play, the 49ers will turn to Spencer Burford at left tackle, according to Schefter. Either lineman will be blocking for quarterback Mac Jones, who is subbing in while Brock Purdy is out with toe and shoulder injuries.
Earlier in the week, Rapoport said the 49ers expect Purdy to miss somewhere between 2-5 weeks. But on Sunday, Schefter reported that a source told him Purdy’s injury has “progressed a lot” this week. While he gave a caveat that the team is “not optimistic” Purdy could return for the Niners’ home opener in Week 3 against Arizona, it’s apparently now a slim possibility.
Whichever 49ers players are healthy enough to play will look to improve to 2-0 against the Saints, with kickoff set for 10 a.m. on Fox.
