HMPV, Bird Flu and Norovirus: What Should US Be Most Worried About?

As infections from three viruses—human metapneumovirus (HMPV), bird flu, and norovirus—continue to climb, infectious disease and population health experts told Newsweek about the recent rise in cases, prevention measures, and what may come next.
Newsweek reached out to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) via email.
Why It Matters
Bird flu (H5N1) has been transmitted from animals to humans in the United States, while HMPV cases are on the rise in China. Meanwhile, norovirus, a non-respiratory virus, has reached its highest levels for this time of year in more than a decade, according to the latest CDC data.
The viruses result in thousands of fatalities annually, although the majority of cases are less severe.
The typical winter respiratory viruses—influenza, COVID-19, and RSV—are also circulating, adding to public health uncertainty.
