The Indiana Hoosiers are one March Madness away from going 10 straight years without advancing past the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament, but Darian DeVries will try to halt that streak in his first year as head coach. DeVries goes from one team that just missed the NCAA Tournament (West Virginia) to another when he takes over as the Indiana basketball team’s head coach for the 2025-26 college basketball season. Indiana hasn’t gone 10 straight years without a Sweet 16 appearance since the late 1940s into the 1950s.
The 50-year-old head coach led Drake to three NCAA Tournament appearances in six years before taking the West Virginia position. DeVries was born in Iowa and coached in Iowa, so he has Midwestern roots that could help him secure incoming freshmen for the Indiana basketball roster or players in the college basketball transfer portal. Indiana basketball roster news
DeVries’ final day before becoming a 50-year-old man was an enjoyable one as he landed one of the top players in the transfer portal to join him at Indiana. Reed Bailey, a 6-foot-10 forward who played his last three years at Davidson, was the No. 42 overall player in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. He committed to Indiana on Sunday, April 6, which delivered an early birthday present to DeVries, who turned 50 the day after. Bailey led Davidson in points, rebounds and assists, averaging 18.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season.
DeVries’ son, Tucker, is following his father to Indiana as well. Tucker averaged 14.9 points over eight games at West Virginia before a season-ending shoulder injury, which should allow him a fifth year of eligibility. DeVries doesn’t have much time for an extravagant milestone birthday celebration as Indiana still has work to do to fill a competitive roster for the 2025-26 college basketball season, but Bailey choosing Indiana over schools like Texas and Kentucky is an offseason victory for the Hoosiers.
