Kansas basketball under Bill Self: Insiders give transfer portal news, 2025 recruits, roster, and targets

The Kansas Jayhawks are coming off a disappointing season, failing to make the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. The 2025-26 Kansas basketball roster will look drastically different from last year’s squad, with just one player returning who started a game in 2024-25. Flory Bidunga only started six games, so it will be virtually a brand-new starting five for head coach Bill Self. He has dealt with that overhaul three times in his 22 years at the helm in Lawrence, so he should be up to the challenge.
Self and the Kansas basketball coaching staff will continue scouring the college basketball transfer portal after already earning several commitments. Which college basketball transfers can help lead Kansas on another deep NCAA Tournament run? Kansas basketball roster news
The Jayhawks are welcoming incoming freshman Darryn Peterson, who was named the No. 1 player in the 2025 class by 247Sports on Wednesday. He is the first player to be named the No. 1 player in his class since Josh Jackson in 2016, and he is the third Kansas signee to be the top player in his class in the 247Sports rankings era (since 2010). Peterson is expected to be the team’s lead guard as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Self has also signed Loyola Chicago guard Jayden Dawson and Illinois guard Tre White. Dawson was an All-Atlantic 10 performer with 13.9 points per game, while White averaged double digits for the Illini. Kansas has made the top four schools for St. Bonaventure transfer Melvin Council Jr., who averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
