Victor Wembanyama sat out his first game of the season for the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday due to a calf injury. Despite the absence of their cornerstone superstar, however, the Spurs still managed to secure a 123-110 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
De’Aaron Fox led the way for the shorthanded Spurs, scoring a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting, to go along with two rebounds, 11 assists, a steal and four triples in 35 minutes of action. Thanks to Fox’s strong play, San Antonio improved to 9-4 on the season. Sunday’s victory marked the Spurs’ first win in their last three games.
Wembanyama had a strong start to his third season with the Spurs. In 12 games played, the 7-foot-3 big man was able to produce averages of 26.2 points on 50.2% shooting, 12. 9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.1 steals and a league-best 3.6 blocks in 34.7 minutes per contest. He’s also knocked down 1.7 triples per game on a 34.5% clip.
Wembanyama’s hot start, however, came to an abrupt halt after the Spurs ruled him out for Sunday’s contest due to left calf tightness. On Monday, the Spurs provided a significant update on the injury.
“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Victor Wembanyama underwent an MRI that revealed he has a left calf strain. The injury occurred in Friday night’s game against the Golden State Warriors. The team will provide updates as appropriate,” the team’s announcement read, via NBA reporter Marc Stein.
Along with the Spurs’ announcement, Shams Charania of ESPN also reported an unfortunate development on Wembanyama’s calf. According to Charania, the 21-year-old star is “expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.”
This is a tough break for the Spurs, who could be without their best player for the rest of November and potentially beyond.
