Would you like a cinema on Thursday 19 January? Maybe to see a highly anticipated film with a stellar cast. As in the case of Babylon, the new upcoming film by Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle (the mastermind behind La La Land and Whiplash so to speak), with a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire and Olivia Wilde. Set in Los Angeles in the roaring ’20s, this gangster story already promises from the trailer to bewitch us with music, images and outrageous excesses, in an attempt to trace the rise and fall of some of the protagonists of the Hollywood of the beautiful and damned. The anticipation for the release of the film is not just spectators: the film has already been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards 2023 including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. To know what to expect from the story, we have to wait until we enter the hall. What we can already imagine is that from January 19 onwards, the grooming world will be affected by a great return to the roaring 20s.
Grooming 2023: a return to the classics
The new men’s grooming is a throwback. A style lesson borrowed from the old Hollywood of the 1920s based on pomade, sharp combs and lots of savoir faire, as in the case of the look sported by Brad Pitt in the trailer of his latest film effort. To copy the vintage trend, the secret is to start with the barber’s scissors. The haircuts in 2023 include minimum lengths on the sides and a higher tuft in the center, to be worn pulled back. After working on the cut, you can think about the crease. The winning styling in this case is a great classic: side parting and rivers of jelly to slick the hair backwards. Alternatively, the hair can be pulled back even without a parting, being careful not to overdo the volume. To make the look more modern and less ‘plastered’, experts recommend focusing on slightly wet and more compact products such as hair wax. Unlike traditional pomade, wax is more elastic and easy to spread and allows you to create a structured crease with a matte finish. Here are three recommended by Esquire to copy the 20s trend.
Barberino’s Modeling Paste Matt Effect
To create a grooming inspired by the 20s but with a modern twist, instead of the usual pomade, focus on a medium-hold wax with a matte finish. Its non-sticky texture guarantees a natural effect, whether applied with a comb or used with the hands. Just heat a knob of this modeling paste on your hands and apply it to your hair to create the desired styling.
Bullfrog High Definition Shiny Pomade
In case you want to stay faithful to the vintage look, go ahead for a good dose of shiny pomade (but with a high-tech formula). Like this one from Bullfrog Barbershop, a paste designed for shiny and super-defined hair, which offers a strong hold without weighing it down or greasing it. Thanks to its formula with a high amount of water, it is very easy to remove and leaves no residue. Its extremely elastic composition ensures softness, making the hair remodelable during the day.
Davines This is a strong dry wax
This is the right product if you are a beginner with the twenties look: the dry consistency of this hair wax with a matte finish in fact allows easy and controlled application, defines and separates the strands without leaving residues and lasts all day thanks to the extra strong hold. The plus? The formula does not contain parabens and dyes.
