Tips for finding a new job in the new year

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (GOOD THINGS UTAH)- Troy Lamb came in today to give us some tips while looking for jobs this January. More people look for a new job in January than any other time of the year. With Utah’s strong economy, employers are ready to hire. Workforce Services is hosting a virtual job fair on January 11th to help Utah job seekers looking to start the new year with a new job.
Troy’s first tip is to update your resume. Research the job you are applying for and tailor your resume showing relevant experience and skills to showcase your qualifications for the position. Employers spend, on average, 10-30 seconds screening each resume, because of this, you need to target your resume to the employer. Once you get the interview, Troy recommends significant preparation, like researching the company and being ready to share why you would be an asset to their team. A very common question that comes up in interviews is Tell me about yourself, so be prepared and have a 60-second interview commercial that tells a summary of your experience, skills, and strengths and why you are a good fit for the company. Prepare examples by describing the situation, what action you took, and the results of your actions to answer behavioral-based questions about your problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills. Practice answering questions “out loud” before the interview.
For those looking to get a better job or upscale to a new career, start with workforce services. You can visit their website at jobs.utah.gov to register for workshops with additional tips on finding employment, help polishing your resume, or to search and apply for jobs. Their website currently has more than 40,000 available jobs. They also provide free in-person coaching and online workshops with the tools and resources to be successful in your job search. Visit your local employment center for one-on-one help. They also have their next statewide virtual job fair coming up on Thursday, January 11th, from 10 am to 1 pm. They will have more than 75 employers attending from government, healthcare, construction, automotive, e-commerce, and more.
