The cinematographic phase of the “last” Woody Allen, that of his past 70 years, gives us Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a 2008 film written and directed by the brilliant New York director. The superstar couple (in life since 2010) Penélope Cruz – winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress – and Javier Bardem stand out. With them Rebecca Hall and a very sensual Scarlett Johansson. The film was presented out of competition at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona, broadcast tonight at 21.10 on Twentyseven, envelops the viewer in the warm Catalan atmosphere. We are in the summer in the city of ramblas (there is also a short stop in Asturias) for two American girls: the wise but extremely sensitive brunette Vicky (Hall) and the uninhibited and restless blonde Cristina (Johansson). In this training journey they come into contact with a world unknown to them, represented by the painter Juan Antonio (Bardem), feral seducer and his fiery ex-wife Maria Elena (Cruz).
The relationship between husband and wife even before the divorce was complex and stormy, but the presence of a third person, Cristina, manages to unite them again, creating a balance of art and eros. Cristina thus finds herself living a drunken mènage à trois. Allen creates a romantic and onric comedy about the instability of feelings beyond happiness, irony, humorous situations that lead to melancholy. Beautiful costumes by Sonia Grande.
