Last month, there were reports about YouTube working on a trimmed-down version of the Premium plan. Now, it’s finally launched under the name “YouTube Premium Lite.” While you can enjoy ad-free videos at a price lower than that of YouTube’s regular Premium plan, there’s a catch.
YouTube has launched an affordable ‘Premium Lite’ plan for users who are into videos
Today, YouTube announced the expansion of a more affordable Premium Lite plan to users living in the United States. The company’s new premium subscription plan costs $7.99 per month. Unlike the YouTube Premium plan, which costs $13.99 per month, or the $10.99 Music Premium plan, the Premium Lite plan is for users who are mostly into videos.
Now, you don’t have to worry about ads while watching comedy videos, cooking-related stuff, or other video content on YouTube. However, the new plan doesn’t offer ad-free music. Additionally, you won’t be able to download any videos or enjoy them in the background.
So, if you are looking for either of the above features, you’ll have to stick with the regular Premium plan. Those interested only in ad-free music should choose the Music Premium plan. It’s worth noting that the latter doesn’t offer ad-free videos.
While the existing Premium plan is great and all, many subscribers have previously criticized YouTube for showing ads while watching videos. We hope that the video-sharing giant won’t let that happen this time around. Moreover, YouTube says that the new plan will be available in Thailand, Germany, and Australia in the coming weeks.
Here’s a possible reason why the plan doesn’t include ad-free music
It’s likely true that those who are subscribed to Spotify, Amazon Music, and more don’t care much about music on YouTube. That could be one of the reasons why YouTube didn’t include ad-free music and music videos in the new Premium Lite plan. The company, in its announcement, also noted that the YouTube Music and Premium plan has now surpassed 125 million subscribers, including trials globally.
