Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ’s first sit down with Donald Trump in the White House next week is a “high stakes” affair based on the US president’s past meetings with foreign leaders, according to a security expert at the Lowy Institute.
The worst possible outcome of the Oct. 20 visit risks being a “meltdown” similar to the experience earlier this year of Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskiy , said Sam Roggeveen , program director at the Sydney-based organization’s International Security Program. Alternatively, he said, it could be “perfectly cordial” where the president and prime minister “agree warmly” on things.
