The US has threatened to withdraw from some NATO structures in order to pressure Europe into contributing more to the continent’s security.

The US is threatening to withdraw from some NATO coordination bodies if European countries do not take on most of NATO’s defense responsibilities and conventional defense, including intelligence and missile systems, by 2027. The US wants European nations to avoid depending solely on the US for security, contribute more to defense, and more actively help Ukraine. If the US does begin reducing or shifting its involvement in NATO, it could significantly weaken Europe’s collective defense and lessen Ukraine’s security guarantees against future Russian aggression.
For Ukraine, this means that if the war continues or escalates, its allies might have fewer resources and diminished willingness to help. Everything depends on how quickly European countries respond to this political pressure from Washington. Meanwhile, the US has released a new national security strategy that highlights the Trump administration’s foreign policy principle of America First. The document also underscores force as the best means of deterrence, Europe’s return to civilizational self-sufficiency, and the need to end hostilities in Ukraine.
