Build a Rocket Boy is the studio known for making what was arguably the worst game in 2025 with MindsEye, as well as being known for having a c-suite executive class that would rather pin the studio and MindsEye’s woes on alleged corporate espionage instead of their own mistakes and issues they have as leaders.
The core of Build a Rocket Boy is based in the UK, but it also has a satellite team it set up in Montpellier, known as Build a Rocket Boy France. The team worked on MindsEye alongside the UK team, and now, the studio has reportedly been placed under judicial liquidation according to French publication Origami.
An estimated 50 people will be impacted by this, as there were still around 50 developers left at BaRB France following the multiple rounds of layoffs that have impacted the entire BaRB team. While this is almost certainly the latest result of the studio’s struggles following a poorly received launch for MindsEye last year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it added as yet another result of ‘corporate espionage,’ according to BaRB’s co-CEO Mark Gerhard.
But while Gerhard looks to bring alleged evidence of the internal and external sabotage that Build a Rocket Boy has allegedly been the victim of, another 50 people will be losing their livelihoods on top of the other BaRB employees that have already been laid off as a result of MindsEye’s poor launch, which, on top of its technical issues, included a slew of problems baked into its story and gameplay that takes a lot more than a couple of patches to fix.
All that said, BaRB is technically still on the path to trying to give MindsEye a redemption arc, where it launched in a poor, disappointing state, only to be fixed after years of updates. The question is whether BaRB will be around long enough to see that through.
