On Friday March 7, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it would effectively be ending all collective bargaining for Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) officers. The move is a shock to many and ends years of progress for government workers at the organization.

Before you continue reading, you should know that collective bargaining refers to when a workers’ union negotiates with an employer on behalf of the employees who are members of the union. This allows workers to get what they believe to be proper compensation and benefits (such as healthcare, paid sick leave, and paid time off) for their work. Around the world, collective bargaining is a common practice among unionized workers in many industries, ranging from airline pilots in Europe and Asia to writers and government employees in the United States.
